The Cluster: pen & ink in-situ
This illustration was not a commission, I am using this building to showcase different ways I could illustrate a property. This illustration shows what can be achieved with a pen & ink drawing in-situ. Because it was a private, internal space, it was possible to complete the whole illustration at the venue with no time limits or restrictions of access.
If the viewpoint is in the public sphere with restrictions, then I would do as much of the compositional pencil sketch stage and inking stage as possible and take photographic reference to complete the illustration back at my desk. The composition stage is the most important to get the feeling of an in situ sketch.
The finished illustration of the Cluster co-working space courtyard and building.
The composition was worked out with pencil and the main elements were sketched in.
Starting the inking. I usually work from the top and the left to avoid smudging the lines.
An action shot!
Close-up of the pen I used: a Fine Rotring Art Pen.
The illustration still in the A3 spiral bound Daler Rowney multi media thick cartridge paper pad.
